Bahia is a special place to go. The heart of the State couldn’t have better place than Chapada Diamantina. The panoramic views from the top, amazing flora and fauna and the caves will bring you unique feelings.
In the 19 Century, Bahia was one of the biggest diamond producers in the world. That time, in Lençóis City (the gate to Chapada Diamantina), a 3,000-karat stone was found. Named “Sergio” is the biggest diamond ever seen in the planet.
The point is that where there is mining there’s greed. In Chapada Diamantina wasn’t different. The focus on diamonds made people forgot the Nature. Intending to protect the environment, in 1998, IBAMA (Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources) forbidden the usage of machines to extract diamond (too late, but better than nothing does). Good for one side, bad for another, as the illegal diamond extraction remains until nowadays, mainly because the inspection there is very poor.
This is the reason why the tourism in Chapada Diamantina is more important than we can imagine. It moves the economy and helps to protect the environment over there.
Don’t you agree that this is a noble reason to visit Chapada Diamantina? And also you will see and visit places like Morro do Pai Inacio, Cachoeira da Fumaça, Gruta da Lapa Doce, Pratinha, etc. Prepare your legs because once there you gonna walk a lot, but trust me: there’s a reward per each mile!
Lençóis City is about 250 miles from Salvador, Bahia. When you book your hotel, ask them to pick you up at the airport. Best thing to do!
If you have been there, share your experience here 🙂
